Accessible Residence Hall, VR for Social Good Project

A VR experience to educate prospective students about the accessibility amenities available at UF’s Cypress Hall

Description

We are team United Hotcake Preferred and we are working on the accessibility hall project. Recently Cypress hall has undergone improvements to include many new accessibility features such as chair lifts and bumper buttons for doors. Though the hall is designed well, it can be difficult and expensive for potential students to travel to Gainesville and tour the hall in person. So we put together a VR tour of the space, so potential students could feel confident in applying for a room by learning more about it and seeing if it suits their needs.

The experience allows the student to move around several rooms in the hall. Each room is accompanied by narration providing more context. Some rooms also have points of interest that provide additional information. For instance, when a user looks at the chair lift, a video starts playing showing it in action. Closed captions are also provided to make the experience better for the users. This experience is entirely web based, so people can view it on VR headsets, mobile devices, or traditional desktop computer.
